Anthropic bills Claude through Stripe. That matters, because Stripe is strict about address checks and hands the issuer decline straight back to you with very little explanation. If your card keeps failing on the Claude billing page, the fix is usually one of four things. Here is the whole process with a virtual card.
What Claude costs
| Plan | Price | Transaction fee on our card |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | n/a |
| Pro (monthly) | $20 per month | $0.87 |
| Pro (annual) | $17 per month, billed yearly | $0.00 on the annual charge |
| Max | from $100 per month | $0.00 |
Prices move, so confirm on the Anthropic pricing page before you load the card. The pattern that matters for fees is simple: anything under 30 EUR carries a $0.87 transaction fee, anything above it does not. Paying Pro annually skips twelve of those fees.
Why the Claude payment page rejects your card
Stripe checks the billing address
Stripe runs an address verification check on most cards. If the address you type does not match what the issuer holds, the charge can fail even with plenty of balance. Copy the billing address from your card details page rather than typing your home address.
The merchant category is not open
Anthropic bills in the digital goods and software categories, MCC 5817 and 5734. Cards that only open retail categories reject the charge before your balance is even checked. Our BIN has both open, along with 7372 for data processing services, which covers API billing.
The authorisation hold pushed you over
Stripe places a short lived hold to confirm the card is live. On a card loaded with exactly $20, that hold is enough to fail the charge. Load $22 for Pro or $105 for Max.
The 3D Secure challenge went unanswered
A European issued card triggers a bank verification window. It has a short timeout. Have the dashboard open in a second tab so you can pull the code the moment it appears.
Step by step: subscribing to Claude Pro
- Fund your wallet. Deposit USDT, BTC, ETH or TRX. Confirmation usually takes minutes.
- Issue the card. Go to Cards and create a USD Visa with 3D Secure enabled.
- Load it. $22 covers Pro. $105 covers Max with room for the hold.
- Open Claude billing. Settings, then Billing, then pick your plan.
- Fill in Stripe checkout. Card number, expiry, CVV, then the billing address from your card page, character for character.
- Clear 3D Secure. When the bank window opens, press Fetch 3DS in the dashboard, copy the code across, and submit.
Claude switches to the paid plan immediately and the renewal runs on the same date each month.
Paying for the Anthropic API instead
API credits work differently from a subscription. You buy credits up front and burn them as you go, so there is no fixed monthly charge to plan around. Two things to know:
- Credit purchases bill under the same categories as the subscription, so the same card works.
- Auto reload will try to charge the card whenever your credit balance drops below a threshold. If the card is empty at that moment, you pay a $0.87 decline fee and your API calls start failing mid job. Either keep a healthy buffer or turn auto reload off and top up manually.
If you run Claude Code against the API rather than a subscription, this is the setting that catches people out during a long session.
Keeping the subscription alive
- Load a buffer, not the exact amount. $25 on a $20 plan absorbs the hold and any pricing change.
- Top up two days before renewal. Crypto confirmations are fast but not instant, and a busy network on renewal morning is an expensive coincidence.
- Do not block the card between renewals. A blocked card returns a decline, and the retry costs $0.87 each time.
- Run every AI subscription on one card. The $8 maintenance charge is per card per 29 day cycle, so three tools on one card cost a third of three separate cards.
Frequently asked questions
Does Anthropic accept virtual cards for Claude Pro?
Yes. Claude billing runs through Stripe, which accepts virtual Visa and Mastercard numbers. The card needs an available balance, an address that matches the issuer record, and 3D Secure support.
How much does Claude Pro cost?
Pro is $20 a month or $17 a month billed yearly. Max plans start at $100 a month. Check the pricing page before you load the card, since plan prices change.
Why did Stripe decline my card on Claude?
Stripe passes the issuer response straight through. The usual causes are an insufficient balance once the authorisation hold is added, a closed merchant category, a billing address mismatch, or an unanswered 3D Secure challenge.
Can I pay for Claude Code with the same card?
Yes. Claude Code is covered by a Pro or Max subscription, and Anthropic API credits bill under the same merchant category, so one card handles all three.
Is there a fee difference between the Pro and Max plans?
Yes. Charges under 30 EUR carry a $0.87 transaction fee, so the $20 Pro plan pays it. The $100 Max plan sits above the line and pays no transaction fee at all.
Do I need to keep the card unblocked between renewals?
Yes. A blocked card returns a decline to Stripe, and Anthropic treats that as a failed payment. Unblock the card and top it up before the renewal date.
What happens to my conversations if the payment fails?
Nothing is deleted. The account drops to the free tier with the lower usage limits, and full access returns once a successful charge goes through.
